The world has been experiencing complexities recently unlike any in recent living memory. Social distancing due to the Covid-19 pandemic means that we're now not able to experience things as we once did, and this includes getting married.
In Australia, and in Queensland in particular, we've been advised that the limit on people at a Marriage Ceremony is 5.
Many people had plans for an extravagant or full service wedding this year, and they are now facing the reality that they may not be able to share that experience with a large number of family and friends as they had once hoped. That must be frustrating, having your ideal date planned then realising that you are not able to have what you wanted.
An option has always existed to have an elopement ceremony, which usually includes the same basic 5 people as today's weddings do, and possibly a few more.
The concept introduced here is Drive-Thru weddings! This means that the couple are able to have a basic elopement ceremony, in a different venue! A unique and special way to celebrate their special day, it will be a talking point for years! Just imagine in years to come, when the kids say "Mum, Dad, where did you get married?" ... What an interesting story that will be to share!
The feedback received on this concept locally has been varied. There has been a LOT of feedback, and some are saying that it is a wonderful idea, especially since it also gives people something different to be a part of during this time of social distancing, while still observing the rules. There have been others who have said it's not for them, and a few saying they did not like the idea. I appreciate everyone getting involved in the conversation, because what, if nothing else makes us human than having our own positions and opinions on things? My response to their feedback is that this concept may not suit all couples. It isn't intended to be a substitute for a large ceremony, rather a way for a couple to still celebrate when they want to, and in a way that suits their style. They may still choose to have an elopement and ditch the car - thats fine.
After this pandemic is over, I will still be offering this as an option if people want it, and I will also re-commence offering full-service weddings where a couple can have as many guests as they want.
Above all else, this shows off the best part about my job as a celebrant - the chance to work together with my couples, to create not just a ceremony, but an experience that makes their special day the most memorable, intimate and personal event it can be. I absolutely chatting with couples and getting to know what makes them tick, asking how they met, and then creating a ceremony that tells their love story in a way that is unique to them.
